Drift right across from Hvar Town to the wooded archipelago of some 20 small islands, rocks and reefs, stretching out toward the horizon. Paklinski Islands, known to locals as Pakleni Otoci, are a gorgeous hideaway for the day, with their string of standout beaches and tiny coves basked by sunshine.

This fragrant plant is the star of Hvar's bountiful flora. Until the mid-1970s, Hvar was #8 among the world's largest lavender producers. Today, the pretty village of Velo Grablje in the island's interior hosts an annual lavender festival in summer. The herb features in dishes, desserts and drinks served across the island.

Smack in the middle of the island, Stari Grad Plain, also known as Ager Pharensis, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, created 24 centuries ago. This remarkably preserved masterpiece of ancient Greek farming landscape has tiny plots fringed by drywalls, beehive-shaped farm huts, vineyards, olive groves and flower-dotted fields, all paired with sea views.
